A Rare and Wondrous Discovery at Casa Rosa: The Elusive Lizard Orchid
Here at Casa Rosa in Assisi, we always tell our guests to keep their eyes open when exploring our beautiful grounds and the surrounding Umbrian hills. Nature has a way of surprising us, but a recent discovery by one of our guests truly took our breath away!
While staying in our Giotto apartment, an observant guest spotted a remarkably unique wildflower growing nearby. Suspecting they had found something out of the ordinary, they snapped a photo and sent it to a friend who happens to be a professional botanist in Zurich.
The response? Absolute excitement.
Meet the Lizard Orchid
As it turns out, our guest discovered a Lizard Orchid (Himantoglossum hircinum), an incredibly rare and fascinating species of orchid.
If you look closely at the image captured by our guest—which we’ve shared below —you can see exactly how it earned its name. Each individual flower features a long, twisting, ribbon-like "lip" that mimics the tail of a lizard scurrying through the grass.
These orchids are notorious for being elusive. They require very specific soil conditions, undisturbed habitats, and just the right amount of Mediterranean sun to thrive. Finding one in bloom is a genuine treat for nature lovers and a testament to the rich, unspoiled biodiversity we are so blessed to have around Assisi.
The Magic of the Umbrian Countryside
Moments like this remind us why we love sharing Casa Rosa with people from all over the world. Beyond the historic streets of Assisi and the panoramic views of the valley, there is a quiet, vibrant ecosystem waiting to be discovered right outside your doorstep. Whether you are a keen birdwatcher, a botany enthusiast, or simply someone who appreciates a peaceful walk in nature, you never know what rare wonders you might stumble upon here.
A huge thank you to Giotto’s guest for sharing this magnificent find with us (and giving a botanist in Switzerland a thrilling day at work!).
